What we do

The Huntsville-Madison County RACES unit supports local emergency management by providing direct radio communications between the Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Operations Center located in Huntsville AL, the Alabama Emergency Operations Center in Clanton AL, and other RACES networks in the event of an enemy attack, disaster, or incident which endangers life or property. Often using our own equipment, qualified amateurs provide augmentation and back-up communications for response agencies and other volunteer organizations.

In addition to maintaining 'Memorandum of Understanding' (MOU) with local agencies as The American Red Cross, our local radio group participates in various public service communications events as part of our ongoing training process. Our radio operators are routinely involved in these activities :

  • EOC assistance
  • National Weather Service SKYWARN program
  • National Weather Service Stream Monitoring
  • Net Control or Net Liasion for SKYWARN and other emergency nets
